Young Guns Xaver and Jakob Kiebler Finish On Top at the 2016 German Kitesurf Masters
May 16, 2016, Sylt, Germany—The first event of the 2016 German Kitesurf Masters was held on the German island of Sylt from May 11-16. The event consisted of a Slalom Race, Freestyle, and Big Air Event.
Team Naish riders and brothers, Xaver Kiebler, 16, and Jakob Kiebler, 17, competed in all three events. Xaver came out victorious in the Slalom Race and fourth in Big Air with Jakob finishing in second in Freestyle.
The Kite Slalom race is a new format being adopted for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. This is a huge feat for the kiting community, especially for the kiting youth, who will be apart of what looks like an exciting future for the sport. The Slalom race format consists of riders navigating around a large course with several buoys for a total of five races.
The Sylt event—the first of the German Kitesurf Masters series—is an important race for Xaver. His main goal is to get into the Youth Olympics in 2018; if he comes out on top this season he has a good shot at it.
After a long and difficult race, and a series of perfect starts and fast riding on his Naish 14m Torch, Xaver was able to finish victorious. One step closer to his ultimate goal.
The following contest was the Freestyle, which started with very rough conditions in a gusty and cold north sea. In the third round of the junior elimination Jakob Kiebler, riding his Naish Monarch Twin Tip, was put against his younger brother Xaver. Jakob edged out Xaver from the competition in the third round and went into the finals feeling strong. It was a very close heat with Jakob narrowly missing the top spot but finishing in second. Reflecting on his performance Jakob explains, “I wanted to win this competition but I wasn’t able to show my best tricks today. I’m happy with the second place though!”
The last highlight during the Kite Surf Masters was the Big Air contest. All riders—women, men and juniors—started together in the same elimination. Xaver performed very well in this event, winning four of his heats and impressing the judges with huge kite loops and awesome one-footers. In the end Xaver placed in fourth overall, the best junior in the Big Air contest.
Xaver and Jakob are looking forward to the next big event in Kite Surf Masters series in Fehmarn, in the beginning of June.
