Neutron vs. ADX: Which Wing Is Right for You?

Choosing the right wing can make a huge difference in your experience on the water. To help you decide between two standout options in the Naish lineup, the Neutron and the ADX, we sat down with Noah Hoffman from the Naish R&D team to break down the key differences. Whether you're chasing waves, cruising in flat water, or learning your first jumps, here's what you need to know to pick the perfect wing for your style and conditions.

Low-end power: light wind performance

When it comes to light wind performance, the Neutron takes the lead. Thanks to its deep draft and low dihedral design, the Neutron generates impressive low-end power. It lets average riders size down half a size smaller than you’d typically ride with the ADX, while still getting up on foil with ease.

The ADX, on the other hand, requires a bit more effort to get going in light conditions but rewards you with better handling and control once powered up. It's more stable at the high end of its wind range and thrives when the breeze picks up.

Understanding dihedral: flat vs. “V” shape

The Neutron’s low dihedral means it has a less lift between the center of the wing and the wingtip, which enhances low-end power, improves upwind angles, and reduces drag during maneuvers like tacks. It also boosts free-fly performance, ideal for wave riding where the wing trails behind you like a shadow, staying out of the way.

In contrast, the ADX features a higher dihedral, giving it a more balanced and upright position above your head. This makes it easier to handle in gusty or choppy conditions, especially when freeriding or freestyle riding.

Maneuverability & control: carving or cruising?

If tight turns, responsive control, and seamless wave riding are what you're after, the Neutron is your wing. Its compact size and boom handle make it ideal for small waves and technical maneuvers, especially when you need precise control over power delivery.

But if you're more into cruising or riding in variable conditions, the ADX’s longer wingspan, balanced dihedral, and canopy tension give it the upper hand in overall stability. It tracks cleanly through tacks and gybes, and its user-friendly nature makes it a favorite for freeriders and those learning freestyle tricks.

Top-end Speed: who’s fastest?

While the ADX wins in terms of effortless top-end speed, the Neutron isn’t slow. It was designed with a wide speed range to stay versatile on the water. You’ll have no problem overtaking waves or keeping up on a downwind run, but if speed is your primary focus, the ADX is the better choice.

Wave riding: built for the surf

This is where the Neutron truly shines. Its softer canopy tension, low dihedral, and excellent free-fly characteristics make it perfect for wave riders. It "breathes" in gusts, providing a smooth and stable experience when flagged from the front handle.

That said, the ADX still holds its own in swell and can handle chasing down waves, especially with its added comfortability at speed and going upwind. But if wave performance is your top priority, the Neutron was built with you in mind.

Freestyle & jumps: spin, soar, and stick it

For freestyle riding, the ADX is the clear winner. With its tight canopy tension and higher dihedral, it offers better predictability during takeoffs and aerial maneuvers. It feels more stable in off-axis spins and rotations.

The Neutron can still jump, and its control makes it fun for playful riding, but it lacks the same locked-in feel in the air that freestyle riders crave.

Freeride & flat water: the best all-rounder?

Choosing between these wings for freeride comes down to your local conditions and riding style:

  • Neutron: Ideal for light, variable winds and casual cruising. Its ease of use and it’s low-end make it a great choice for progressing riders.
  • ADX: Better suited for stronger, gustier conditions where you want to ride fast, carve hard, or venture into freestyle territory.
Ergonomics & handling: boom vs. handles

Both wings are thoughtfully designed for comfort and performance:

  • The ADX features a long front handle for riding one-handed or with a single point harness line, making it easy and ergonomic.
  • The Neutron’s boom system offers incredible control, especially in waves. It allows micro-adjustments for pressure and positioning, perfect for riders who like to fine-tune their setup. Plus, the removable boom makes it easy to pack for travel.
Durability & construction: built to last

Both wings share Naish’s premium construction, with radial panel layouts and dual luff panels designed to handle the stress of wave crashes, freestyle landings, and downwind pounding. Every panel is oriented to maximize strength where it's needed most.

Wind range & versatility: when to choose which

In short:

  • Go with the Neutron if you ride in light wind, chase waves, or want a smooth, controllable wing with great low-end power.
  • Opt for the ADX if you're into high-speed cruising, freestyle tricks, or riding in gusty or strong winds.

Both wings have overlapping wind ranges, but each shines in different conditions. The Neutron makes it easy to get going early, while the ADX stays composed and efficient as the wind builds.

Final thoughts: two wings, two styles

Noah sums it up best: “The goal with the Neutron and ADX was to offer two distinct feelings—so whatever kind of rider you are, there’s a perfect Naish wing for you.”

Still unsure? Try both! Your ideal wing might just depend on the day, the spot, or the session vibe.
