Casper Steinfath Announces Denmark to Host 2017 ISA Stand Up Paddle World Championship

August 16, 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Casper Steinfath, Naish team rider and ISA Vice President, announced that Denmark will become the first European country to host the ISA Stand Up Paddle World Championship in 2017. Denmark is set to follow Fiji, who is hosting the event for 2016. Events will take place in both Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, as well as Steinfath’s hometown of Klitmøller, popularly known as “Cold Hawaii.”

Steinfath traveled to Brazil during the Rio Olympics to make the announcement with ISA officials and Danish ambassadors at the Danish National house on Ipanema Beach. “We are delighted to bring our 2017 ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship to Denmark and for the first time to Europe,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. The decision was made largely thanks to Steinfath and the Danish government through social media and online campaigning.

This announcement is a testament to the global growth of stand up paddling and the ISA Stand Up Paddle World Championships, which hosted 260 competitors from 26 countries at the 2015 championship in Mexico. ISA officials are hoping that Denmark’s hosting will allow more paddlers to compete in the event due to better accessibility for other European teams.

Dates for the event have yet to be announced. However Steinfath is ecstatic about the announcement. “On a personal level, this is truly a dream come true for me—I can’t wait to compete for gold medals in my backyard in front of my family, friends and fellow Vikings!”
