Wyatt Miller wins the La Ventana Double Cross

41 competitors got together in this years 19 mile La Ventana Double Cross race to the Isla Cerralvo and back. The wind was cranking and swells were rolling. Naish team rider Wyatt Miller once again stepped up using his 6.4 Indy and 2013 Bullet 95 and completed the course in a record time of 41:40.

He comments: “I got a good start and was out in front of the two previous winners Tyson Poor and top kiter racer Johnny Heineken. As we got mid channel we were going across the wind in mast high rolling swell with steep chop ramps all around. Took a couple scary jumps and had to scale back the speed as it quickly became apparent that speed was going to mean jumping, and jumping was going to mean crashing. Tyson and Heineken were about 100 yds ahead of me when we finally saw the boat near the island that was to be our jibe mark. The swell started to get a bit smaller close to shore so I put the hammer down and passed Heineken before the boat. Thankfully on the return reach we were heading down the swell instead of across it and for the first time I felt comfortable sheeted all the way in. I would try to duck into one swell and go as fast as possible through the smooth trough but the waves were always gaining on us and you would have to back out of one swell and into the one behind it. Tyson and I quickly put a good mile between us and Heineken. The two of us were neck and neck half way back when Tyson gave a holler and we both put the pedal to the metal. For miles I swore I could hear Tyson just upwind of me, but when I finally looked back he was a quarter mile behind having hit a fish and crashed hard. From there all I had to do was stay on my feet and I was able to cruise to the finish line. It was by far the hardest race I have ever competed in. Can’t wait for next year.”
