Strong Finishes from Team Naish Riders at the 2015 OluKai Ho’olaule’a
May 4, 2015, Maui, Hawaii – The 7th annual OluKai Ho‘olaule‘a took place on Maui’s north shore this past weekend seeing favorable results for #TeamNaish rider Kody Kerbox—the second competitor on a 14 foot board to finish in the Elite Open division—Annie Rickert (first in the 17 & Under Women’s division on her Naish Javelin 12’6” LE) and Mariko Strickland Lum (first in Women’s 18 – 29 on her Naish Javelin 14’ LE).
Starting from Maliko, the conditions for this year’s downwinder saw epic conditions with 20+ knot winds generating solid wind swell that provided endless opportunities to catch long glides for the 340 paddlers.
Making up for an unscheduled early start, Kerbox describes “The Olukai was pretty tough . . . the race started 10 minutes early and I was way upwind behind the pack of 200 plus paddlers. Once I realized the race actually did start, I put my head down and went to work passing more competitors then I have ever passed in my life! No one passed me the entire race … my Javelin 14′ felt really good!”
Ultimately shearing 4.5 minutes off his time from last year, Kerbox crossed the finish line with a time of 0:50:36—only 6 minutes behind first place. Stay tuned for more to come from team Naish as the season has just begun!
